Competition authority warns of risks in the AI value chain

The Portuguese Competition Authority (AdC) has raised concerns about potential competition risks in the AI sector due to high concentration levels in chip design and manufacturing. The AdC highlighted that supply constraints, vertical integration, strategic partnerships, and ecosystems like NVIDIA's CUDA could lead to bottlenecks, lock-in effects, and reduced interoperability. The AdC emphasised the need for transparent and non-discriminatory access conditions as part of its broader approach to monitoring generative AI markets.
