Latvia Government examines implementation plan for EU AI Act

The Cabinet of Ministers has considered the information report "On the implementation of the requirements of the Artificial Intelligence Act" prepared by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development (VARAM), which defines the responsible institutions and the necessary actions for the full implementation of the EU AI Act in Latvia. Inga Bērziņa, Minister of Smart Administration and Regional Development, stated that "the introduction of the AI Act is necessary for our country to create a safe and innovation-friendly environment where technology is developed and used responsibly". In the coming years, Latvia plans to strengthen its capacity to regulate AI by promoting the development and monitoring of high quality AI products and ensuring that AI is used responsibly and in accordance with internationally accepted standards.

Cabinet of Ministers supports the establishment of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence

The Cabinet of Ministers in Latvia has approved a draft law for the establishment of the Latvian National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NMIC), which is being promoted by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development. The NMIC aims to enhance the use of reliable and secure artificial intelligence to benefit society by increasing productivity and competitiveness. The Centre will focus on the practical application of AI and building national capacity to manage and mitigate associated risks.

National AI Strategy on Developing Artificial Intelligence Solutions (2020):

Latvian's national AI strategy which aims to promote the uptake and growth of AI in the whole economy. The proposed strategy outlines policy actions in the following areas and devotes particular attention to the promotion of AI in the public administration: (1) Raising the awareness of and competencies in AI across society through education reforms; (2) Promoting the adoption and development of AI in the public and private sector; (3) Engaging actively in national and international cooperation; (4) Developing a solid legal and ethical framework for AI; (5) Unleashing the benefits of a well-developed data ecosystem; and (6) Investing in a digital and telecommunication infrastructure to support AI developments. The Ministry of Interior plans to spend approximately € 1.5 million on digitalisation with a focus on AI.
