Cambodia embraces industrial AI innovation

At the Tengchong Scientists Forum in Yunnan, China, Cambodian Undersecretary of State Hul Seingheng declared Cambodia's commitment to industrial-based innovation founded on inclusive AI cooperation and the responsible use of emerging technologies, aiming to accelerate collaborative research and development (R&D) to bridge the digital divide. Undersecretary Seingheng emphasized that Cambodia is integrating AI into its industrial modernization, aligning with the Science, Technology, and Innovation Roadmap 2030, and urged the global scientific community to prioritize human-centric governance guided by principles of fairness and transparency. Undersecretary Seingheng identified the skills gap as the most significant barrier for developing nations, stressing the vital need for intensified STEM education and AI literacy to ensure equitable benefits from AI, and outlined three key international priorities: advancing joint applied AI R&D, enhancing technology transfer for capacity-building, and establishing inclusive ethical governance.

Cambodia government officials share intel on Cambodia's current approach to AI regulation

It has been reported that, at a consultative workshop among ASEAN officials in Phnom Penh, Cambodian government officials have revealed various intel on their approach to AI regulation, including: (1) a push to strengthen Cambodia’s position as a role in AI governance and ethics in the ASEAN region (Khov Makara, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications); (2) all ministries and state institutions in the Cambodian government have been urged to enhance the flow of information, focusing on publicising their achievements and responding swiftly to fake news and misinformation (Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications); and (3) Cambodia’s commitment to AI ethics and governance across various sectors, with the introduction of Cambodia's framework for the digital economy (2021-25) (Sam Sethserey, Director General of the General Department of Information Technology and Communications).
